Avram Turing researches how an indigenous African knowledge system can inform the development of ethical and culturally grounded artificial intelligence (AI).

Drawing on the West African Ifá knowledge system, one of the world’s oldest structured binary algorithmic computational systems, our work seeks to bridge the gap between traditional epistemologies and modern digital technologies, particularly AI.

Our focus includes

    • Integrating interpretive and moral reasoning frameworks into AI design
    • Rethinking computation as a culturally embedded process rather than a purely technical one
    • Collaborating with researchers, policymakers, and technologists on responsible AI development
    • Interrogating Al systems and misinformation.

Building on our work in online content integrity and digital ethics, we investigate how the ancient African computational logics (particularly the Yoruba Ifá knowledge system) can contribute to developing more context-aware, responsible, and human-centered artificial intelligence.

We, and others, at the forefront of the resurgence of this ancient African knowledge system in the age of Al, are dedicated to play our role in building ethical and wise technology through the integration of global knowledge systems.

Through interdisciplinary research, public engagement, and collaboration with scholars and technologists, we aim to

    • Bridge epistemologies between traditional systems of wisdom and modern computational design.

    • Reframe AI ethics through cultural perspectives that value interpretation, moral responsibility, and communal reasoning.

    • Develop conceptual frameworks for AI systems that embody the Ifá principle of “no computation without context.”

This initiative reflects Avram Turing’s broader commitment to rethinking technology through ethical, inclusive, and culturally grounded lenses. In doing so, it seeks to make a distinctive contribution to global debates on the future of AI governance and decolonial innovation.
